Hurricane Season Preparedness: Be Ready Before the Storm

As hurricane season approaches, we want to remind our Southwest Louisiana community of the importance of being prepared. Living along the Gulf Coast brings many blessings, but it also means being familiar with the challenges hurricanes and tropical storms can bring. At Lundy LLP, we’ve seen firsthand how critical preparation can be in protecting your family, your property, and your peace of mind.

Don’t Wait—Prepare Now

While we all hope for a calm and uneventful season, it’s crucial to take action now rather than scrambling once a storm is on the horizon. Preparation doesn’t just mean stocking up on supplies—it means having a plan in place, knowing your evacuation route, understanding your insurance coverage, and keeping essential items and information ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Build Your Emergency Supply Kit

To help you get started, we’ve created a comprehensive Disaster Supply Checklist. This list includes essential items you should gather and store in an accessible location well before a storm hits. Make sure your emergency kit includes:

  • ✅ Water – 1 gallon per person, per day for at least 3–7 days
  • ✅ Food – Non-perishable items like canned goods, snack food, and cooking tools
  • ✅ Cash – At least $300–$500 in various increments
  • ✅ First Aid Kit
  • ✅ Medications – A two-week supply of prescription drugs
  • ✅ Clothing – Include rain gear and sturdy shoes
  • ✅ Flashlights – One for each family member
  • ✅ Batteries – Lots of them
  • ✅ Essentials – Toilet paper, trash bags, etc.
  • ✅ Portable NOAA radio
  • ✅ Generator and additional fuel
  • ✅ Personal hygiene items
  • ✅ Waterproof container for documents
  • ✅ Matches
  • ✅ Copies of keys
  • ✅ Baby diapers and formula
  • ✅ Pet care items
  • ✅ Chlorine bleach
  • ✅ Extra glasses/contacts
  • ✅ Cooler for storing perishables
  • ✅ Books and games for comfort and entertainment
  • ✅ Fire extinguisher
  • ✅ Duct tape
  • ✅ Phone chargers
  • ✅ Local maps
  • ✅ Basic tools – like wrenches and pliers

You can download or view the checklist here to print and check off as you prepare your kit.

Additional Preparedness Tips

In addition to gathering supplies, we encourage everyone to:

  • Review your insurance documents and ensure your coverage is up to date.
  • Take clear photographs or videos of the inside and outside of your home and its contents.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts, including your insurance company and roofing contractors.
  • Store important personal documents (birth certificates, social security cards, etc.) in a waterproof container or take them with you if you evacuate.
  • Track all evacuation-related expenses and mileage in case reimbursement or claims become necessary.
