Dietary Supplement Kratom Linked to More than 100 U.S. Deaths in One Year
The alleged miracle supplement kratom has been linked to an increasing number of fatalities, including the recent death of a Georgia father. According to the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the man’s family, distributors, manufacturers, and retailers of Expert Botanicals kratom powder marketed and sold kratom products “based on deceptive claims about its safety and its ability to treat, prevent, and cure medical conditions/diseases and failed to warn consumers of the risk of addiction, overdose, and death.
Wrongful death suits have also been filed by family members in connection with Kratom-related deaths in Colorado, Florida, Montana, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.
Lundy LLP is currently investigating claims on behalf of those who have suffered addiction, death, or other severe harm.
The National Library of Medicine offers the following information on Kratom.
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree native to parts of Africa and Southeast Asia with a long history of traditional medicinal use. Kratom is also known as Biak, Thom, and Thang. The Kratom leaves primarily brewed as tea, have long been used in those regions to manage pain, opioid addiction withdrawal, and as a stimulant to combat fatigue.
Kratom has become popular across the globe for its opioid substitute and stimulant effects. Kratom forms of absorption include tea leaves, capsules, tobacco-style chew, dried leaves to smoke, and powder as a food and drink additive. It is also available as an extract for vaping and “shots.”
Certain case reports associate kratom exposure with seizures, psychosis, liver damage, kidney failure, other medical conditions, and death.
While the limited clinical studies of kratom effects are not well defined, data suggest dose-dependent stimulant and sedative effects exist. In addition to antinociceptive (pain relief), antidepressant activity, anxiolytic-like (sedative) effects, and anorectic (appetite suppressant) effects, there is growing concern over the drug’s safety and effects due to an increase in hospital visits and deaths around the world.
